The Requirements
When Alstom Transport – a world-leading supplier of rail products, services and systems – won the contract to maintain trains for Westcoast Mainline, it needed to bring together engineers and technical teams from across the UK. These teams required high-quality offices for the duration of the project, which was expected to last for up to three years. Alstom had to quickly find a way to get permanent-quality, fully-equipped office accommodation in place for the start of the project.

The Solution
Alstom prepared a detailed specification for the accommodation it required, and asked three modular building suppliers to submit proposals. The solution proposed by Portakabin proved to be the most comprehensive package – it met all of the firm’s specifications and offered the best value. It was backed up by the Portakabin customer charter, which promises to deliver buildings on time and on budget – and if a building is ever delayed, the company offers a week’s free hire for every day it is late.
Not only could Portakabin supply the highest quality building modules to create the new offices, it could provide a complete one-stop-shop solution by fitting out the offices with climate control and a full range of furniture. Eight modules were used to build the two-storey office structure for Alstom, incorporating open-plan office areas on both floors, a kitchen area, meeting rooms, conference room and directors’ offices. The building was delivered and installed by Portakabin, and then fully fitted out with desks, screens, drawer units, low-level storage cupboards and the climate control system. The whole project was completed in time for the arrival of the project teams from all over the country.
The fact that Portakabin could provide everything for this building was a significant advantage for us, since it meant we had just one supplier to deal with for the entire project. We are very pleased with the quality of both the buildings and the furniture supplied, which have created a permanent-standard working environment that is just right for this long-term project. Everyone has settled in to the new building very well. The service from Portakabin throughout the design and build process was very good, and they have been very responsive to any issues we have raised since the building was handed over.
